![]() ![]() Zen is a term that describes a feeling of peace, oneness, and enlightenment. In Zen, ensō (円相, “circular form”) is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. When the mind is free to let the body create? It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God (‘God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere’ (Hermes Trismegistus)). The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. The year-to-year oscillations between normal, warm, and cold conditions in the tropical Pacific associated with the ENSO cycle involve massive redistributions of upper ocean heat. There is nothing we can do to stop El Niño and La Niña events from occurring. We can use surface-water temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific to designate conditions as one of three phases of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system - neutral (or “normal”), warm (El Nino), and cold (La Nina). Zen in its essence is the art of seeing into the nature of one’s own being, and it points the way from bondage to freedom. Zen tries to free the mind from the slavery of words and the constriction of logic. The symbol in Buddhism can also be interpreted as the desire for perfection, but the recognition that the universe is the way that it is. The open or incomplete circle represents the beauty of imperfection, while when the circle is whole, it represents the idea of perfection. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a recurring climate pattern involving changes in the temperature of waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It symbolizes strength, elegance, and one-mindedness. The enso is a manifestation of the artist at the moment of creation and the acceptance of our innermost self. Enso (formally spelled ensō) is a sacred symbol in Zen Buddhism meaning circle, or sometimes, circle of togetherness. ![]()
